JON GLASS

Media Super has announced the departure of chief investment officer Jon Glass who joined the fund in 2009. Jon tells Industry Moves what he regards as his greatest career achievement and his best piece of advice for those just starting out in financial services.

What do you regard as your greatest career achievement?

I regard the r&d web at AMP Henderson as a noteworthy and satisfying achievement. I was its champion, but I must also say that without the efforts of a huge number of other people it would never have happened. So with Sir Isaac Newton we can say "standing on the shoulders of giants" but in fact that aphorism is centuries older than Isaac, apparently.

What skill do you think is paramount in working in the financial services industry?

A sense of mission for customers. You can't run a business without them.

If you could give advice to someone starting out in the industry what would it be?

Learn effective time management, as it sounds as sweet as a cello if done well.

Would you consider yourself an introvert or an extrovert? And why?

A semi-extrovert: this is an industry of human beings (who use spreadsheets) after all.

What was your very first job?

A tutor in Pure Mathematics.
