Westpac has found their new chief financial officer.

Michael Rowland joins Westpac from KPMG where he has been a partner in the financial services and lending teams for the last six years. It was his second run with the organisation; he previously spent time with the organisation from 1982-1996.

"Michael's experience is broad across both CFO and business leadership roles. His most recent experience in consulting as a senior partner at KPMG also brings valuable external perspectives," said Westpac CEO Peter King.

King previously held the CFO role with Westpac before taking on the CEO role late last year.

"In particular, Michael's expertise in business restructuring, delivering sustainable productivity and revenue programs and in disciplined financial management will be an important contributor to making Westpac a simpler and stronger bank."

Rowland has significant financial services leadership experience, including as the CEO of ANZ's Pacific business and CFO for institutional banking. He was also the CFO for ING Australia for two years following the creation of the ANZ/ING joint venture in 2002.

Rowland replaces Gary Thursby, who has been in the role since December of 2019 when Peter King was named acting CEO. Thursby will continue in the role until Rowland joins later this year.
