The $37 billion public sector fund has appointed the head of South Australia's consumer affairs watchdog as its chief executive.

Dini Soulio has taken on the top job after ten years as commissioner of consumer affairs, commissioner for corporate affairs, liquor and gambling commissioner and commissioner for prices.

At the same time, he headed up consumer and business Services within the state's attorney general's department.

Soulio has also held roles with the Australian Customs Service and ASIC, the corporate regulator.

"He is a highly respected public sector executive leader and brings experience in managing a broad and complex portfolio to the role," Super SA said in a release.

Earlier this month, Soulio took over from Patrick McAvaney who was appointed interim chief executive after Dascia Benne stepped down eight months ago for personal reasons.

Bennett, who served as chief executive for six years, left after bedding down fund selection and limited public offer.

The superannuation fund for South Australian government employees said McAvaney has now returned to his role as director of policy and governance.
