SSGA Active Quant Equity head moves to Boston to take up expanded role

State Street Global Advisors (SSGA) has confirmed that Olivia Engel has been appointed to the newly-created role of deputy chief investment officer of SSGA's Global Active Quantitative Equities (AQE) team and will relocate to Boston, effective at the end of March 2017.

Engel will work closely with Ted Gekas, chief investment officer of AQE, ahead of his pending departure from the industry at the end of 2017, after 22 years at SSGA.

Following his departure, SSGA intend for Engel to assume full responsibility for management of the Global AQE team.

In this new role, Engel will maintain her current portfolio management responsibilities, including global oversight of all benchmark unaware strategies, as well as the strategies' research efforts and global positioning.

Engel has held the position of head of active quantitative equity, Asia-Pacific, since 2011 and has been responsible for managing the Australian and Asia Pacific ex-Japan active equity portfolios. Her team made history in 2016 as the first quant manager and first female-led team to win the distinguished Australian Financial Review Smart Investor Blue Ribbon Award for the best Australian large cap strategy.

Succeeding Engel is investment industry veteran, Toby Warburton, who was been with SSGA since 2008.
