A former operating chief of BT Funds Management has been appointed to the board of the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation, the manager of the New Zealand Superannuation Fund.

Following an extensive executive career in funds and asset management Fiona Oliver - who worked for the New Zealand arm of AMP - has held governance roles across a breadth of sectors including renewable energy, natural gas, technology, commercial property, and financial services.

Oliver sits on the boards of Freightways, First Gas which operates the largest natural gas transmission and distribution network in New Zealand, the National Australia Bank-owned BNZ Life Insurance and was a director of Tilt Renewables which owns Australian wind generation assets.

Guardians' chair Catherine Drayton welcomes Oliver's appointment saying brings "extensive experience to the Guardians' governance team along with a strong understanding of global financial influences."

Existing board member Doug Pearce will keep his seat until 30 September 2024.

Pearce has over 35 years of experience in the capital markets.

He has also served as director and chair of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance, the Pacific Pension Institute, and the Pension Investment Association of Canada.

He was a member of the advisory board at the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs and the Faculty Advisory Board at UBC Sauder School of Business.

Earlier, he was head and investment chief of investment of The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation - one of Canada's largest institutional investors, with over $211.1 billion in assets under management.

Pearce first joined the Guardian's board in 2016.
