Northern Trust Asset Management has expanded its Melbourne team by hiring Matthew Lambert as head of quantitative portfolio management for the Asia Pacific.

In his newly created role, Lambert will bring the firm's diverse range of quantitative solutions and insights to institutional investors in Australia and New Zealand.

Lambert joins from Franklin Templeton, where he spent the last 16 years as the lead portfolio manager for core Australian equities portfolios and tactical asset allocation strategies.

Before that, he worked at Legg Mason as a quant portfolio manager.

Lambert joined Citigroup Asset Management in 1997 as a quantitative research analyst after working for eight years in photographic manufacturing software development, document imaging and aerospace.

"The expansion of NTAM's Australian footprint through portfolio management located here in Melbourne, Australia will enable us to better partner with and deliver solutions to our clients across Australia and New Zealand", said Bert Rebelo, head of Northern Trust Asset Management in Australasia.

"With more than 25 years of experience building alpha and risk models for equity and fixed income portfolios across Australia, Asia and emerging markets, Lambert will be a great complement to our global quantitative portfolio management team and our clients across the region," he added.

Northern Trust has offices in Melbourne and Sydney.
