Nathan Buttigieg has departed Christian Super following the superannuation fund's merger with Australian Ethical.

He has been appointed to the newly created role of head of transformation at NGS Super.

Buttigieg worked at Christian Super for 14 years, most recently as chief of operations and product, although he also did a five-year stint as chief member officer.

Reporting to the chief strategy officer Ben Facer, he will be tasked with supporting transformation initiatives across the organisation.

Buttigieg said he enjoyed serving the education sector is his various roles at Christian Super, so NGS provided the opportunity to continue in that space.

"Moving to NGS was the right opportunity at the right time," he stated.

The superannuation fund's acting chief executive Natalie Previtera added that Buttigieg will concentrate on project management office responsibilities and operational excellence.

"We're mindful of his strategic background so we are looking at him helping us develop our business development strategy," she said.

"We are very happy to have Nathan join the team. He has such a wonderful background and skill set and will help us take our strategy to the next level."

Acknowledging her recruit's passion for education, Previtera said NGS' strategy is still very focused on independent and Catholic schools.

"That's not to say we don't want others to join us. That's just where our key focus is."

NGS has also hired a second Christian Super staff member. Walter Ius joins as customer service manager.

Only two people from the Christian Super leadership team are continuing on with Australia Ethical. One is chief executive Ross Piper who will take on the role of chief executive -super and Conrad Tsang has moved across as chief technology officer.

That leaves six members of the leadership to move on.

These include its head of strategy Emma Jonceski and chief member experience officer, Astrid Dare.
