LSL Partners, a newly-launched boutique funds management firm, has announced the appointment of Tim Cheung as partner and chief investment officer, effective March 2018.

Based in Sydney, with plans to launch in Hong Kong in 2019, LSL Partners will construct alternative investment products focused on the Asian region for Australian and international investors.

Cheung was most recently a global equities analyst with Perpetual Investments, a role he was appointed to in November 2015 and departed from in December 2017. Prior to this, he worked at Morphic Asset Management as principal and head of research.

Joining Cheung at LSL Partners is partner, executive chair and CEO, Kim Ivey; partner and head of research, Chung Ip; and chief operating officer, David Gray.

Commenting on the new venture, Ivey, said: "LSL Partners will offer investors innovative choices when investing in Asia. With the right people and a deep understanding of the region, there are many reasons why a skilled investment business can, and should be established in Australia, with links into Asia. LSL Partners is purposefully built to fill this need."

Cheung added: "Both my Head of Research, Chung Ip, and I have been investing in Asia for many years. Contrary to popular belief, the rewards to investors who have the patience and capability to conduct deep fundamental research are greater in Asia than in more developed markets. Chung and I are particularly excited about opportunities in the technology, energy, consumer, infrastructure, financial and gaming sectors, areas where we have specialist expertise. I bring a seven-year track record of generating outstanding alpha in Asia, from both long and short strategies."

LSL Partners' first product, The Fury Fund, is an Asian long/short equity fund, investing in Asian public markets with an absolute return focus. It will be available to wholesale Australian investors and is expected to launch in May 2018.
