Qantas Super chief executive Michael Clancy has been appointed inaugural chair of CFA Societies Australian Governance Council.

The Council provides strategic direction and governance oversight to CFA Societies Australia, on behalf of members Australia-wide.

In addition to the chair, the council will comprise the three local presidents and an additional board member from Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

"This is a key leadership role in advancing our Australian strategy and the four goals of brand, engagement, value, and growth," said CFA Societies chief executive Lisa Carroll.

Clancy - who has headed up Qantas Super for seven years -  has had a long career in the financial services industry, particularly in the superannuation, investment and insurance sectors.

The superannuation fund boss brings strong governance and strategy experience, gained in investment management leadership roles and board positions including membership associations and large not-for-profits.

Clancy is currently a non-executive director of the superannuation trustee boards at NAB Wealth, a director and co-founder of cloud-based wealth advice service Big Future, and a consultant on business, investment and product strategy to the Australian wealth management industry.

He is a director of the Glebe Administration Board and a former director of the Association of Superannuation Funds Australia.

As for his executive career, Clancy spent 15 years at National Australia Bank, most recently as executive general manager of investment platforms at NAB Wealth.

"I congratulate Michael and look forward to working with him in his new role, which is a key leadership role in advancing our Australian strategy and the four goals of brand, engagement, value, and growth," added Carroll.

"Michael brings strong governance and strategy experience, gained in investment management leadership roles and board positions, including membership of investment associations and large not-for-profits.

"Michael will help to promote the CFA Societies Australia and CFA Institutes' mandate of serving the greater good by creating an environment where investor and community rights come first, markets function at their best and economies grow."

Clancy added it that it was a privilege to be the inaugural chair of the Council and he looked forward to working with everyone involved in the local CFA Societies.
