A former Macquarie chief executive has been appointed to the Future Fund Board of Guardians.

Mary Reemst worked for the Macquarie Group for over two decades, including seven years in the top job and 11 years as the global head of credit.

In the latter role, she oversaw the investment banker's wholesale and retail exposures, including lending, trading activities, equity investments and new products.

In July 2014, Reemst stepped into the chief executive officer role at Macquarie Bank.

She joined the group in 1999 having held senior roles at Bankers Trust Australia.

As for board appointments, Reemst has sat on the boards of the Australian Bankers' Association, the Australian Financial Markets Association, and the Financial Markets Foundation for Children.

Canberra said the appointment will help maintain the high level of skills and experience on the Future Fund Board.

The Future Fund was established in 2006 to help the Government meet its unfunded superannuation obligations.
