MA Moelis Australia is boosting its equity research team by hiring analysts to cover resources and small and mid-cap industrial stocks.

Paul Hissey joins as an executive director and will lead the firm's expansion into the natural resources sector.

He has over 20 years of experience in the sector, including analyst roles with Goldman Sachs and Royal Bank of Canada.

Hissey began his career as a geologist in mining operations and held several resource and production roles at BHP and Lihir Gold and Xstrata before moving to capital markets.

He joins MA Moelis after working in corporate management, most recently as finance chief at Navarre Minerals.

The investor's head of markets Simon Scott said Hissey brought significant experience and deep sector relationships to the team.

"Natural resources have long been a global strength of Moelis & Co, our strategic alliance partner, and we look forward to building our resources offering in the Australian market."

Scott said he expected to expand this team further in the near term.

MA Moelis has also welcomed Tom Tweedie as vice president.

Tweedie is re-joining the small and mid-cap industrials research team after leaving the firm three years ago to work at Platinum Asset Management and then Bennelong Equity Partners.

Before his first stint at MA Moelis in December 2018, the analyst spent almost four years at Bell Potter Securities.

MA Moelis is owned by the $8.4 billion MA Financial Group - an ASX-listed financial services firm specialising in managing alternative assets, lending, corporate advisory and equities.

Established as a joint venture with NYSE-listed Moelis & Company, the firm employs over 600 people in Australia, China, Hong Kong and Singapore.
