Sophie Ismail has been appointed to the board of HESTA, effective March 2019, representing the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU). She is the eighth female member of the fourteen-strong HESTA board.

Ismail has experience in a range of roles providing legal and policy advice and representation to unions, workers and governments, including workers in the health and community services sector, the fund said.

Previously, she served as principal lawyer at the Victorian Department of Education, as a senior associate at Holding Redlich Lawyers and as a senior legal officer at the Attorney-General's Department. She has also served as an assistant director in the Workplace Relations Policy Group in the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, and as an industrial officer for the Queensland and Victorian Branches of the Independent Education Union of Australia.

Ismail replaces former ACTU employee representative, Michael Borowick.

In welcoming Ismail and thanking Borowick, HESTA CEO Debby Blakey said: "During his tenure, Michael Borowick brought a deep breadth of experience and knowledge to the HESTA Board, we wish him all the best for the future. At the same time, we're delighted to welcome ACTU representative Sophie Ismail who was appointed to the HESTA Board in March."
