Goldman Sachs has promoted Gavi Friedland to head of metals and mining in Australia and New Zealand.

Since joining the investment banker as an analyst 12 years ago, Friedland has worked across multiple offices, including Johannesburg, Perth, and Melbourne.

Earlier in his career, he interned at J.P. Morgan, CLSA, and at STANLIB, the South African asset manager.

While in Australia, he has helped lead numerous milestone transactions for Goldman Sachs' largest natural resources clients.

In his new role, he will maintain his existing client responsibilities and take ownership of the strategic direction and future growth of the metals and mining franchise.

The bank confirmed that Peter Watson will continue to head the Perth office, where he has been instrumental in building the West Australian franchise and the metals and mining business.

"Peter will work closely with Gavi to continue to grow our metals and mining franchise," .said the bank's investment heads Nick Sims and Zac Fletcher.

"With Gavi's appointment, Peter will have greater scope to focus on strengthening our relationships with our most important natural resources clients while also expanding our West Australian client base."

The two executives congratulated Friedland on his new leadership responsibilities.
