Macquarie Group has announced the appointment of Phil Coffey to the Macquarie Group and Macquarie Bank boards as an independent director, effective immediately.

Coffey previously served as the deputy chief executive officer of Westpac Banking Corporation from 2014 until his retirement in 2017. He was also responsible for Westpac's mergers & acquisitions function and previously held a number of other executive roles including group chief financial officer and group executive, Westpac Institutional Bank.

Currently, he serves as a non-executive director of Lendlease, a member of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation board, and chair of the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation.

Commenting on his appointment, Macquarie Group and Macquarie Bank chair, Peter Warne, said that Coffey's "extensive international experience in financial services and financial markets [will] add valuable perspectives to board discussions."
