Justin Howell has confirmed to Industry Moves his appointment as a director of global impact investment firm, LeapFrog Investments, effective 9 October 2017.

Howell was most recently the head of strategy and operations for investments with $84 billion super fund, First State Super. At LeapFrog Investments, he joins former First State Super CIO, Richard Brandweiner, to "help build additional institutional grade impact strategies." According to the firm, "the objective is to extend Leapfrog's investment capability to bring more developed market capital into the developing world."

Howell first joined First State Super in October 2013 as head of strategy & projects - investments. Prior to that he spent over ten years in various product related roles with Perpetual, notably as general manager, multi-sector group. He has also previously worked at ING Australia.

Commenting on his new role, Howell said: "Leaving First State Super was a very difficult decision for me. It is a wonderful company with a strong purpose, exceptional talent and an exciting journey ahead. First State introduced me to the idea that you can use your skills to play a role in helping others achieve a better financial future, particularly those on lower incomes. For me, Leapfrog is an extension of this. Leapfrog is looking to deliver strong returns for its clients by investing with purpose driven businesses. These businesses are literally reaching millions of emerging consumers providing essential services that we would typically take for granted. I am looking forward to be able to contribute to a vehicle like this."

Brandweiner added: "Justin and I have spent many years together developing investment management capabilities. He is one of the most outstanding Heads of Operations in the industry and brings very strong strategic thinking and execution capabilities. I know he has enormous respect for First State Super, as do I of course, and he has only moved on from them to help create something that we believe will be hugely important for the industry as a whole."

At First State Super Howell has been replaced by Michelle Crosbie who takes on the role of head of investment services.
