Canberra has named Michele Bullock as the central bank's new deputy governor replacing Guy Debelle who resigned to join a green energy group founded by billionaire Andrew Forrest.

Bullock is the first woman in the bank's 62-year history to be appointed to the role.

Bullock is currently an assistant governor at the Reserve Bank of Australia responsible for the bank's financial stability and has an oversight of the payments system.

Welcoming her to the position, RBA Governor, Philip Lowe said Bullock has played a leading role in the Bank's work on financial stability and has a well-deserved international reputation for her work on payments systems.

She is a also a member of the Council of Financial Regulators working closely with extensively with APRA, ASIC and Treasury.

"Michele also brings considerable management experience to the role and I look forward to working with her," added Lowe.

Commenting on her appointment,  Bullock said she was honoured to be appointed deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia and excited by the opportunity to serve the people of Australia in this new role.
