Cbus hires from Aware Super

Cbus Super has added a top rated quant portfolio manager to its investment team as it continues to bring assets in-house.

Cbus deputy chief investment officer Brett Chatfield has confirmed that  Eben van Wyk has joined the super fund for construction workers as a senior quant portfolio manager.

At Cbus, his job will be to develop and manage direct equity portfolios and mentor research analysts in support of the fund's direct investing program.

"Eben has long experience in buy and sell side quant roles.  His appointment will deepen our internal capability in quantitative investments and research," Chatfield said.

"Our members will continue to benefit from our internalisation program via enhanced internal investment resources and reduced investment costs."

The quant joins from Aware Super, where he served as the quantitative portfolio manager and head of research for seven years.

Before that, van Wyk worked at the Royal Bank of Scotland in the same role after its ill-fated £49billion take-over of Dutch lender ABN AMRO in 2007.

Van Wyk joined ABN AMRO a year earlier.

Malaysia lender CIMB Group Holdings subsequently bought out the global operations of RBS.

After the eventual closure of CIMB's Australian office, van Wyk was part of a small team that was transferred to a joint algorithmic trading venture between CIMB & Morgans Financial.

There he became head of quant analysis doing quantitative research, data science and implementation of prediction/alpha models for electronic trade execution on global equity markets.

During that time, van Wyk was rated in the top three in Australia for quant research and data science in funds management.

Earlier, he worked at Barclays global investors as a quant research analyst.

Cbus recently hired Myooran Mahalingam as a senior portfolio manager of global equities portfolio construction, Anna Weickart to run the fund's equities manager research program, Jonathon Meagher as a senior analyst with the infrastructure team and Adrian Dark as an associate director with the property team.

Finally, Ashleigh Baxter arrived as an investment manager of direct debit.
