AustralianSuper - Head of Financial Crime, Security, and Resiliance
APPOINTMENT
AUSTRALIANSUPER
Date: July 2020
Position: Head of Financial Crime, Security, and Resiliance

Tom Garcia has a new role at AustralianSuper. The former head of product is now the head of financial crime, security, and resilience.

In his new position, Garcia will look after compliance with anti-money laundering and counterterrorism financing, working to prevent fraud and other financial crime.

He'll also look after business continuity, privacy, data governance, and fund resilience.

"Resilience is used a lot in technical services, and what it speaks to is when something happens, how quickly can you bounce back and what are the systems in place to manage that," Garcia told The Sustainability Report. "That talks to the business continuity plans and business continuity management.

"When something goes wrong, how fast can we rebuild, and how strong are we?"

Garcia joined AustralianSuper in 2017 from AIST where he was CEO.

"I saw this role as a way to get in and use that knowledge on systems thinking and process thinking to implement into these functions," Garcia said. "One of the main objectives I have is to create centres of excellence for areas in the department - AML, fraud, business continuity, and will be about working across the fund and understanding how we will relate to different lines of accountability and what processes we need to implement."
