Former National Australia bank executive Andrew Hagger will step down as chief executive of Twiggy Forrest's Tattarang and the Minderoo Foundation after three years at the helm.

In a release, the family office said Hagger wanted to turn his attention to "other things in life and other challenges"

"It's been an honour to assemble such an extraordinary, high-performing, values-driven team that is having such an impact," Hagger said.

"I'm proud of the deals we have done, the partnerships we have collaborated on, the leaders we have recruited and the businesses we have built."

Tatterang and Minderoo investment chief John Hartman has been appointed permanent head of the private investment firm and acting chief of the philanthropic group.

Chairman Andrew Forrest acknowledged Hagger's successful leadership of Minderoo and investment portfolios.

"I have enjoyed such a close, trusting relationship with Andrew for the past four years, and that will continue," he said.

Also speaking of Hagger, Minderoo co-chair and Tattarang director Nicola Forrest said she was thankful for his leadership, hard work and dedication.

"He leaves  Minderoo and Tattarang in sensational shape," she added.

Meanwhile, Hagger said he would work closely with Hartman directors to ensure a smooth transition.

Hartman said he is excited about the new role, adding that he had "learned a lot" working alongside Hagger.

"We have worked together overseeing a period of strong growth and diversification for Tattarang. I'm proud to have been part of the strong Minderoo Foundation leadership team that Andrew Hagger helped form."

Hagger - a former JBWere chair - was previously the chief customer officer - consumer & wealth at NAB, departing to join the Forrest firms in 2019.

He joined NAB in 2008 after serving as a managing partner at PwC.
